Better Together (“Better Together,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) operates the Better Together mobile application and related services (collectively, the “Service”). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.
By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
1. Information we collect
We collect information you provide directly, information generated through your use of the Service, and limited technical data needed to operate the app.
Account and profile information
- Email address, display name, username, and password (stored in hashed form)
- Optional profile photo and timezone
- If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive the information those providers share with us (such as a stable account identifier and, where permitted, your name or email)
Social and challenge content
- Challenges, circles, friendships, invitations, check-ins, streaks, badges, and encouragement you create or receive
- Optional photos or audio you attach to check-ins or your profile
- Messages, reactions, and activity visible to people you share challenges or circles with
Contacts you choose to invite
- Email addresses or phone numbers you enter to invite others. We use these only to deliver invitations and match pending invites when someone joins. We do not sell contact information.
Device and usage information
- Device identifiers used for trusted-device sign-in, push notification tokens, app version, and basic diagnostic logs
- IP address and request metadata needed for security, fraud prevention, and service reliability
2. How we use information
We use the information we collect to:
- Create and manage your account and authenticate you
- Provide challenges, check-ins, circles, invitations, notifications, and other core features
- Show your progress and content to people you choose to participate with
- Send transactional messages (such as verification codes) and, if enabled, push notifications about reminders and social activity
- Maintain security, prevent abuse, enforce our Terms, and comply with law
- Improve and operate the Service
We do not use your habit or check-in content to build a public profile or sell advertising based on your behavior.
3. How sharing works in the app
Better Together is designed to be private by default. Your check-ins, habits, and progress are shared only with people in the challenges and circles you join or create, according to the visibility settings for that content.
We do not operate a public discovery feed or sell your personal data to data brokers.
4. When we disclose information
We may share information in these limited situations:
- With other users you connect with, as directed by you through challenges, circles, invitations, and profile visibility settings
- With service providers that help us run the Service (such as cloud hosting, object storage, email delivery, and push notification delivery), under contracts that require them to protect your data
- For legal reasons, if we believe disclosure is required by law or necessary to protect rights, safety, and security
- In a business transfer, if we are involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, subject to this Privacy Policy
5. Third-party sign-in and platform services
If you use Sign in with Apple or Google Sign-In, those companies process information according to their own privacy policies. Push notifications may be delivered through Apple Push Notification service, Firebase Cloud Messaging, or Expo’s notification infrastructure.
We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party sign-in provider you use.
6. Data retention
We retain your information for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide the Service, resolve disputes, enforce agreements, and comply with legal obligations.
When you delete your account or request deletion, we will delete or anonymize personal information within a reasonable period, except where we must retain certain records for legal, security, or backup purposes.
7. Your choices and rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or export personal information, or to object to or restrict certain processing.
You can:
- Update profile and notification settings in the app
- Control who sees your activity through challenge and circle participation
- Disable push notifications in your device settings
- Request account deletion or a copy of your data by emailing {{PRIVACY_EMAIL}}
We will verify requests before fulfilling them. We may decline requests that are unfounded, excessive, or prohibited by law.
8. Security
We use administrative, technical, and organizational measures designed to protect your information, including encryption in transit (HTTPS) and access controls on our systems. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
9. Children’s privacy
We collect date of birth at account creation. If you are a parent or guardian and have questions about a minor’s account, contact {{PRIVACY_EMAIL}}.
10. International users
If you use the Service from outside the United States, your information may be processed in the United States or other countries where we or our service providers operate. Those countries may have different data protection laws than your home country.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the updated version on this page and change the effective date above. If changes are material, we may also notify you in the app or by email.
